Art by Michael Spengler

My work is concerned with perception and with the question of what we call reality. I am interested in how images do not simply show the world, but actively participate in constructing it – between compression, darkness, and the search for lightness and open space.

Across my bodies of work, these tensions appear as concrete image spaces: places where narrowness, acceleration, and overlay meet moments of openness, breath, and the possibility of stepping aside. The works become sites where questions of memory, trace, order, and transformation are continually renegotiated.

In focus

Current works and series that mark particular points of emphasis within this practice.

Abandoned / Forgotten

At first glance, the two images appear almost identical. Yet in the first, fragments of abandoned buildings and traces of human presence remain visible, while in the second these have become blurred, ambiguous, or already disappeared – an image of memory shifting as time passes.

Work Areas

At the Shore of the Winds

At the Shore of the Winds develops an autonomous visual world of openness, lightness, and longing. The series arose as a counter-space to the darker thematic undercurrent of the photographic series Constructivism and Neuronal Constructivism.

Neuronal Constructivism

Neuronal Constructivism carries analogue image ideas into digital and neural processes. A condensed visual world emerges in which structure, fragmentation, and over-forming newly shape the relationship between perception and living space.

New Works

In this area I present groups of works that connect to existing fields while pushing them in new directions – from rural landscapes to urban abstractions, image pairs, and experimental constellations.

Single Images

Alongside the series, individual works and pairs are created that do not belong to any larger group. They draw on personal themes or central questions in my practice and stand as autonomous works within it.
